Haiti
I was fortunate enough to be able to visit Haiti for a period of 20 months for
dissertation research. I am studying the effects of international aid
onrecipient women’s NGOs. Specifically, I am interested in the effects of
foreign funding on participation and autonomy. In effect, who is
“participating” and how? Who is directing “development”
in Haiti: the poor classes (the “people”) such as street vendors,
day laborers, peasants, factory workers, etc? The staff of NGOs? The
foreign-educated, lighter-skinned directors? The government? Or the foreign
donor agencies? I am working through these issues as I am finishing the first
draft of my dissertation.
As my research advances, I will be able to post more information on Haiti. In the
mean time, I have put together a database on Haitian NGOs
that were officially registered by the government.
Also, I have compiled a series of information on the web about Haiti: websites for organizations working in Haiti, media
outlets, foreign organizations, etc. If you would like to see it, please visit
the list of websites.
If you would like to update this information, please contact me, as I am interested in keeping
this information public and up-to-date.
