Santa Barbara Camping
Santa Barbara is one of the best states for camping. So, if you're going to California and love outdoor activities, you should definitely camp at Santa Barbara.
Santa Barbara is one of the best places for camping and outdoor activities. The county lies about a 100 miles from the Californian coast and the Santa Inez Mountains. The hospitable mountainside is a boon to all those naturalists, mountain bikers and mountain climbers to name a few outdoor activities. The people of the town are a mixed lot. Some are artists, others movie stars, yuppies, retired persons and students usually from the University of California, the Santa Barbara campus. The county still has that Spanish architectural theme, a spill over from the Spanish colonial days. However, it is still a beautiful seaside town. The most Mediterranean town in California, it has many wineries in northern Santa Barbara County. These, of course, are very tempting camping grounds for wine-tasters and picnickers. There are hotels which provide you with home comforts along the Creek and amidst the grove of Sycamore and Oak trees. There are also safari tents for tent campers with good amenities. For a list of Santa Barbara’s parks and beaches visit the local website.
Santa Barbara summer camps
In Santa Barbara, there are summer camps for children, many of them for fourth to sixth graders. Some of these last for a week. The day they leave for the camp the children are happy and brimming with excitement, while at the same time some of their parents are worried and many shed tears. Camps for adopted children - sometimes where even the parents are allowed to participate in some special activities - provide a chance for the children to take part in educational, recreational and support group activities. For an example of a summer camp, have a look at the UCSB website.
Santa Barbara also has summer camps for adults that provide an opportunity for every one to relieve stress and enjoy a fun filled environment. Here you can unwind and forget the day to day worries and tensions in the company in a selected group of likeminded people. Many a time, this bond with your camp friends continues even after the camp is over and develops into a close relationship. The summer camp is an opportunity to experiment, to leave your thoughts, relationships and day to day chores and move into a new world.
There are camps organized by the Jewish Federation for families and individuals of all ages. They have activities and classes which provide greater insight of the Jewish community.
Lake Cachuma camping
Then there is Lake Cachuma recreation area, which is known for its natural beauty and an excellent camping site for riparian studies, mountain ecology, water testing and wilderness first aid. There are more attractions nearby with golf courses, wilderness areas and Solvang. The Jalama Beach County Park has about 98 campsites - nearly all of them overlooking the beachfront or the ocean. This park is built on 23.5 acres of land, which was privately owned and later donated to the County. The Jalama Creek was an Indian settlement known as 'Halama' and once belonged to the Chumash Indians. The sites have a variety of amenities such as a picnic table and BBQ pit. Then there are the electrical hookups and dump stations. The campsites are mostly given on a first come first served basis.
Lake tours and renting boats
There are also lake cruises which give you a two hour lake tour with a naturalist. From the month of November through February the people focus on unusual birds and Bald Eagles around Lake Cachuma. This area is the winter home of many of these birds. Wild life and flowers blossom with local birds are seen during the months of March through October. The boats are available on rental on an hourly basis, daily basis, weekly or annual basis except on Christmas. Even patio deck pontoons, water bikes, rowboats and outboards are available on rent. The rents range from $15 for a 4 passenger rowboat to $ 250 for a 20 passenger patio deck boat. The booking is made on a daily basis and deposit is a must.
Hiking at Cachuma Lake
You can also go hiking at Cachuma Lake. There are five hiking trails inside Cachuma Lake recreation area. The Sweetwater Trail provides a good site for bird watching. The Oak Canyon Nature Trail is half a mile one way. Further, there are Mohawk Loop and the Mohawk area trail, which is excellent for bird watching. To use the Tequepis trail you will require parking your vehicle outside the forest land as the place belongs to Los Padres National Forest.
Overall Santa Barbara and the area around provide some of the best options for camping. So the next time you or your kids are thinking of camping, you can definitely consider Santa Barbara.
