Choosing Luggage for the Occasion

 Introduction

Think of your luggage as clothes.  Luggage is to be selected depending on where you are going.  You would not wear your business attire on the beach, and you would not arrive at the office in your Hawaiian shirt and sandals.  There is a method in choosing the right luggage for the right time and place.

Luggage providers offer a variety of bags and accessories because they understand the need for a wide selection.  The consumer needs to understand what to expect and what to look for in choosing their luggage.

A consumer can profit from separating luggage into different categories.  Consider the types of trips you will be going on, the activities you will be engaged in, and what possession you will be bringing.  The main aspects of optimal luggage are comfort, convenience, and style.

Types of luggage

Travel backpacks
Convertible backpacks have internal frames, good suspension systems, and can be used as a hand-held bag.  Some backpacks offer a smaller daypack for short excursions.  Backpacks are great for being on the move and for holding gear.  They are not good for longer expeditions or urban settings.

Wheeled luggage
Traditional luggage features in-line wheels and durable structure.  This luggage is good for the business traveler and visitor of urban settings.  Traditional wheeled luggage is not optimal for the adventure seeker.  The business traveler should look for collections that will equip them with suitcases, briefcases, and carry-ons.

Convertible luggage can be used as wheeled luggage or as a backpack.  It can be handled as a backpack or carried as a duffel.  The shoulder straps are usually not suitable for long backpacking trips, so it is best to use this luggage for trips to urban environments.

Duffel bags
Duffel bags are usually priced lower than other forms of luggage.  Duffel bags are good for shorter trips where the traveler will be handling their luggage for the majority of the time.

Duffels also come with wheels.  This luggage is good for the traveler carrying a lot of items.  Some duffels come with shoulder straps, but are not as comfortable as backpacks; so, they are not recommended for long excursions.

Internal-frame backpacks
This luggage is great for extended hiking or wilderness travels.  They offer good support and make it easier to haul a lot of gear over long periods.  Those planning to go camping, backpacking, or hiking would appreciate this luggage.  It is not the best piece of luggage for airline travel or urban settings.

 

Size of the luggage

The job is to find a piece of luggage that is big enough to fit all of your items while leaving room for easy travel. 

Weekends
A carry-on duffel, travel backpack, or wheeled luggage would be fine.

One to two weeks
Try a carry-on bag if you are packing light.  If you have a lot of items, choose a larger travel backpack or wheeled luggage.

A month or longer
Choose wheeled luggage, a travel backpack, or a wheeled duffel.  Storage capacities are usually measured in cubic inches.  Anything from 5000 to 8000 cu. in. should suit you well.

Things to consider

  1. Look for luggage with storage compartments ands pockets
  2. Compression straps can squeeze a bulky bag to a more manageable size
  3. Folders keep clothing organized and free of wrinkles
  4. Toiletry kits are convenient for keeping smaller items in one place
