U-Web FAQ
» Where can I get further help?
Check out both our Creating Web Pages and Help pages for information on page design and publishing. In addition to the information provided here, the U-Mail Help Desk provides limited support for the U-Web system. Support is limited to technical issues involved with publishing your pages on the server. We can offer no assistance with HTML coding or page design. ◌
» What's the U-Web Service? Am I eligible? Is it free?
U-Web is a service for publishing student web pages. All students with U-Mail accounts are eligible to use U-Web. And yep, it's free. For further information, check out our About U-Web page.
◌
» How much space do I have to for my web site?
The storage limit for undergraduate accounts is 100 MB, which will hold a fairly good-sized web site. Graduate students have a storage limit of 200 MB.
◌
» What's the address (URL) of my web site?
Any page you publish on the U-Web server will be accessible at - http://www.uweb.ucsb.edu/~[userid]/[name_of_page.html]
where [userid] is your U-Mail user identification and [name_of_page.html] is the file name of the page. All of your HTML file names must end with the .html or .htm extension to be properly recognized by the web server. Your home page (the main page in your web site) should be named index.html, index.htm, home.html, home.htm, default.html, or default.htm. The URL for your home page will be - http://www.uweb.ucsb.edu/~[userid]

» How do I upload my web pages to the server?

No. You may create subdirectories within your uweb folder using your FTP program.
◌
» How do I delete pages I don't want anymore?
You can manipulate any of the files used in your U-Web site using any of the U-Storage access systems. Visit the Using U-Storage site for details.
◌
» Are CGI or other server-side programming features available?
No. At this time we are not offering any server-based executable content.
◌
» How can I find someone's U-Web site?
If you know the name or user id of the person who's site you're trying to find, check out our Web Page Directory. Otherwise, you can use our Site Search to locate pages by keyword.
◌
» Will my page be found by web search engines?
Your page may be listed with several of the major search engines, though it will not automatically be done so. The search engines work by doing what is known as "crawling," where they will follow links on other web pages and index as they go. You can have your web page added to a particular collection by going to one of the appropriate "Add-A-Link" pages at Google and Yahoo. ◌
» Why can't I host mp3 files?
Commercial music files are protected by copyright, and we don't allow such content to be published on U-Web. See our Acceptable Use Policies for details.
