I wish I knew that woman’s name is told in first person narration similar to Because I could not stop for death. We are given character, a place and setting. I wish I knew that woman’s name gives us much more emotional insight in the the afterlife. It reveals a sorrowful after existence were the only companionship is found in death itself. However the poem draws the reader in by asking us what is the identity of the woman mentioned int the title. It is revealed that she is kind and gentle when the protaganist states
“ so when she comes this way,
To hold my life and hold my ears”
What could the identity of the mystery woman be. It is known that she reminds the deceased that she is dead on a regular basis, and it is also known that she is viewed with fear because of the information she disperses. It can be assumed that the Un named woman is the memories the dead woman has of herself. It is obvious that the mystery woman and the deceased are close as they visit each other often. It makes sense that the visits are the deceased recalling when she was alive, she has been dead so long that she can no longer remember her identity or her name due to the fact that that is no longer who she is. Death has washed over the deceased and created a brand new existence for her. The memories she has as her former self our simply bittersweet reminders that she is now dormant and dead, only relating to death itself.
