Useless Information about Me
Hello.
Hello, everyone. If you are looking for Carlos's little thread on the web, then you have definitely come to the right place. If not, I urge you to immediately click the 'back' button on your web browser unless you are really bored and wish to read utterly useless information about another graduate student at University of California, Santa Barbara.
Some Information About Me.
Firstly, I completed my bachelor's degree in linguistics in May 1999 and my master's degree in linguistics in May 2001; both degrees were earned at Rice University. From August 2001 to May 2003, I taught introductory linguistics, history of the English language, English composition, and child language acquisition at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. At the time, I also provided many useful services to the Registrar's Office at Rice. Now I'm spending my days in Santa Barbara, working towards my PhD.
Some Really Useless Information About Me.
Firstly, it is important to know that I love languages. I suppose that is why I am a linguist. Specifically, I am interested in speech processing, speech recognition, acoustic phonetics, and sociolinguistics. I also enjoy sharing my knowledge and enthusiasm for linguistics. So far, I have been a teaching assistant at Rice University (Houston, Texas), a lecturer at Sam Houston State University (Huntsville, Texas), and a TA and teaching associate at University of California, Santa Barbara.
Even More Really Useless Information About Me.
I love music. I typically listen to classical music, which ranges from Copland's Appalachian Spring to Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen. However, I do like modern music, too (e.g. Blur, Coldplay, Toploader, and Tori Amos).
My other non-linguistic interest is musical theatre. I have collected cast recordings, books and sheet music ever since I was 11 years old. My collection ranges from the classics (Rodgers/ Hammerstein) to modern musicals (Rice/Lloyd Webber, Boublil/Schonberg, Sondheim).
If the Above Is Not Enough, Here Is More Really Useless Information About Me.
I love British comedy. My favourite comedians are John Cleese, Rowan Atkinson, Lenny Henry, Dawn French, Jennifer Saunders, Penelope Keith, Richard Briers and Paul Eddington. I also like the troupe from the Carry On films. I also have a pretty decent collection of British comedy programmes on VHS, DVD, and CD.
Still Here? Well, Here Is A Strange Fact.
Everyone who works or hangs out with me knows that I have an obsession with Jelly Babies. What are they? Click here or Big Heart (below) to find out.
