The explosion of the Internet has introduced many new factors into our society and has blurred the line between reality and virtual reality. What started as a small online community, used for creating personal profiles and seeking out friendship, has turned into a nationwide phenomenon - and a new forum for the drama and gossip that young people seem to thrive on. MySpace is an online community that, to many young people has become an obsession. It has grown beyond seeking out new and old friendships into a place to express yourself, show others the identity you wish to be associated with, and keep tabs on the goings-on in other peoples’ lives. Like MySpace, in William Garrison’s Pattern Recognition, people are also able to create new identities. MySpace, as with other online communities, has become a place where people can act out and satisfy their natural desires and curiosities that cannot be achieved through old-fashioned face-to-face interaction due to inhibitions and insecurities. This can become confusing and even dangerous when the lines between the real world and the online world become blurred.
