Who's on MySpace?

There are different ways in which “MySpacers” utilize their space on the web, which can be grouped into loose categories. Some members join simply because they were curious about the phenomenon and just want to browse other’s profiles or regain contact with lost friends. Their pages are pretty sparse, with only a few pictures, and an “About Me” section containing only basic information about themselves. These are the pages that are looked down upon by the “real MySpacers” and probably have many comments telling them to step it up a notch. Then, there are the inevitable middle aged men whose entire friend list contains 15-year-old girls who have put up half naked pictures of themselves. These members should remind users of the dark side of the internet – that anyone can look at your page, and that not everyone out there is nice and having innocent fun. Unfortunately, there are also those in the community who fuel the fire and use their site to post what is basically soft-core pornography, even though you are supposed to agree that what you are posting is appropriate for all ages. There is also of course the “Emo MySpace Whore”, a phrase of unknown source, but common usage in the MySpace world. These are the members who spend at least five hours a day changing the pictures, background, font, music, etc. on their pages, posting bulletins and blogs, and searching out any way to get a new comment. You can be certain that Photoshop is their best friend. Some people even use MySpace to search out and further their careers. For some it’s trying to get modeling jobs, or photographers and musicians looking to get their names out there. MySpace is an extremely diverse community that brings together people from many different backgrounds, parts of the country, and who have many different ideas and motivations in life.
