Precis

I was excited when i figured out my topic for this project, because it involved spending time doing what I do everyday anyway - go on MySpace. In my project, I discuss the various psychological issues that go along with having an online identity. I talk about the fact that it can be very confusing and problematic when reality and virtual reality collide. In the beginning, I also tie in William Gibson's Pattern Recognition, showing how it is centered around another online community and brings up the same issues of identity. The internet medium used in this project was extremely useful. In a traditional essay, it would be very difficult to use MySpace pages as evidence. There is something about them that just needs to be seen in order to get the full effect, which would be impossible in a conventional, print out essay. With the internet medium, I simply was able to make a link to the page I wished to use as evidence, and it could be seen in all its glory. It was also helpful to be able to make different pages for the different areas touched on in the essay. By doing this, the reader is really able to focus on one idea at a time, and realize what it is I wish to be discussing in that area. Since my topic was an online community, it really made sense for the medium of the essay to be the internet. It helps the reader get into the feel of the topic. This was a very unconventional way to present an essay, and one that I was certainly not used to, but I think it was actually really helpful and relevant.
