University Drinking Song

There are as many versions of this song as there are people who know it. The link is a recording produced by the UC Berkeley Marching Band in the late '90's. The following are the lyrics now familiar to the banks of the Connecticut River.

California Drinking Song

"Oh, we had a little party down in Newport;
There was Harry, there was Mary, there was Grace.
Oh, we had a little party down in Newport,
And we had to carry Harry from the place.

"Oh, we had to carry Harry to the ferry,
And the ferry carried Harry to the shore;
And the reason that we had to carry Harry to the ferry
Was that Harry couldn't carry any more.
(Damn beer).

"For California, for California,
The hills send back the cry, we're out to do or die,
For California, for California,
We'll win the game or know the reason why.

"And when the game is over,
We will buy a keg of booze,
And drink to California
'til we wobble in our shoes.

"So drink (tra la la),
Drink (tra la la),
Drink, drank, drunk last night,
Drunk the night before;
Gonna get drunk tonight
Like I never got drunk before;
For when I'm drunk, I'm as happy as can be
For I am member of the Souse family.

"Now the Souse family is the best family
That ever came over from old Germany.
There's the Highland Dutch, and the Lowland Dutch,
The Rotterdam Dutch, and the Irish.

"Sing glorious, victorious,
One keg of beer for the four of us.
Sing glory be to God that there are no more of us,
For one of us could drink it all alone. Damn near.

Here's to the Irish, dead drunk.
(The lucky stiffs, they drank four fifths.)"

Fight Songs

This is a less-than-official list of our fight songs. El "C" Grande is presently the same rip off of Berkeley's second verse that Irvine, Davis, and Los Angeles use. "Poly's men" was inserted for CPSUSLO since UCSB doesn't regularly play "Stanfurd's men" or "'SC's men" and Irvine beat us to "Long Beach State". However, one has to wonder if "mud" is appropriate in Division I-AAA.

Gaucho
(unofficial Santa Barbara campus fight song)

"We drink beer, we drink beer because,
We like beer, we like beer because,
We drink beer, we drink beer because,
We like beer, we like beer because,
We drink beer!

"Here we are,
We are the Ga-a-a-auchos,
We're the Gau-chos!
We drink our beer,
We like our beer,
We're the Gauchos!
We're the Gauchos.

"Here we are,
We are the Ga-a-a-auchos,
We're the Gau-chos!
We drink our beer,
We like our beer,
We're the Gau-chos!

"We drink beer, we drink beer because,
We like beer, we like beer because,
We drink beer, we drink beer because,
We like beer, we like beer because,
We drink beer!

"Here we are,
We are the Ga-a-a-auchos,
We're the Gau-chos!
We drink our beer,
We like our beer,
We're the Gau-chos!

"We drink beer because,
We like beer because,
We drink beer because,
We like beer because,
We're...
UC Santa Barbara Gauchos!"

Olé Olé

"Olé, olé, olé, olé,
Gauchos, Gauchos."

El "C" Grande
(unofficially official University fight song)
(el say gran-day) por los gringos

"We are Sons of California,
Fighting for the Gold and Blue.
Palms of glory we will win
For Alma Mater true.
Poly's men will soon be routed
By our dazzling "C",
We'll stomp 'em in the mud,
Their green will turn to blood,
In our hour of victory!

U-C-Ssss-B, UCSB, Go Gauchos!"

Composer: Harold P. Williams and N. Loyall McLaren
Arranger: Julie "Chris's 'Daho" Meyer

California, Here I Come
(traditionally played at pre-game, it's probably more appropriate post-game)

"When the wintry winds starts blowing,
And the snow is starting in the fall,
Then my eyes went westward knowing,
That's the place that I love best of all.
California I've been blue,
Since I've been away from you,
I can't wait 'till I get going,
Even now I'm starting in a call:

"California, Here I Come,
Right back where I started from.
Where bowers of flowers,
Bloom in the spring.
Each morning at dawning,
Birdies sing at everything.
A sun-kissed miss said, "Don't be late!"
That's why I can hardly wait.
Open up that golden gate,
California, Here I Come."

UC Alma Mater

Believe it or not, we do have one. It is the same song at all University of California campuses.

Hail to California [536Kb]

"Hail to California, Alma Mater dear,
Sing the joyful chorus, sound it far and near,
Rallied 'round her banner, we shall never fail,
California, Alma Mater, Hail! Hail! Hail!"

Composer: Clinton Morse
(worst lyricist ever)
