• Lloyd House: My undergraduate housing affiliation at Caltech
• Crippling Depression: aka undergraduate life at Caltech. This was my sole motivation for getting the school newspaper.
• PhD: A comic about graduate school by Dr. Jorge Cham, officially titled “Piled higher and Deeper”. Having been a TA for Jorge is one of my biggest claims to personally knowing someone famous.
• xkcd: Another nerdy online comic I really like.
• Hyperbole and a Half: I like sarcasm.
• I Can Has Cheezburger?: I also like cats.
• Hulu: Free online TV and movies (includes commercials)

• Center for Control, Dynamical Systems and Computation (CCDC): The CCDC facilitates interaction among students and faculty in many departments and other universities working in control engineering, dynamical systems, or computation. It organizes a seminar series each term, and classes related to these areas are also linked to this website.

Hobbies & Personal Interests
• Swing Dancing: I love Lindy and the Charleston. Sylvia’s class is an excellent place to learn in Santa Barbara.
• UCSB Ballroom Dance: Proof that chivalry is still alive. Incidentally, also a fun place to do ballroom dancing.
• UCSB Ki Aikido Club: The aikido club at UCSB practices “Shin Shin Toitsu Aikido”, also known as “Ki-Aikido” or “soft-style aikido”. This style emphasizes relaxation, balance, and awareness in both the techniques and in everyday life. I am currently a purple belt in this style of aikido.
• Judo: Judo means “the gentle way,” and includes throws, pins, chokes, and (some) joint locks. I am currently a nidan (2nd degree black belt) in judo.
• Animal Shelter Assistance Program (ASAP): A no-kill cat shelter in the Santa Barbara area dedicated to finding loving homes for stray cats. ASAP is a volunteer-run, community-supported, non-profit organization, and a wonderful example of what’s possible when people work together for a good cause.
• Knitting and Crocheting: I love the idea that I can take some yarn and make it into something wearable and customized (important since most stores don’t sell clothes in my size). My current focus is knitted socks.
Ravelry.com: Like Facebook, but for knitters and crocheters. It’s great because you can see other people’s finished projects for a pattern you’re thinking of using -- you don’t want to find out the pattern with the beautiful model item actually sucks after you’ve spent time and money on it. There are also a lot of great free patterns and links to free patterns on other sites.
• Food: I love food. I wish I had cable so I could watch the Food Network. Alas, I must constrain myself to just looking up the recipes at random.
The Food Network: Awesome searchable recipe archive.
• Basic car maintenance/repairs: Self-taught, in progress.
• Home & Garden: I love HGTV, but I really need my own house before I can justify buying a set of power tools. |
