not like that: demystifying feminist studies back
26:00 (fall 2006)

At the start of WOMST 185: Documenting Feminist Studies, eleven graduate and undergraduate students with little production experience were assigned the task of documenting the history of Women's Studies at UCSB. No formal roles were assigned. Rather, students formed pre-production, production, and post-production groups and attempted a non-hierarchical filmmaking process. During the course, they blended production with theory: reading essays on feminist historiography, theories of feminist film production, and viewing feminist documentaries.

The class was led by Professor Mireille Miller-Young. I organized the production side of the course. Most of the production process was organized by the students on a collaborative wiki.

The final product was edited by more than half of the class. It interwove interviews with both Women's Studies faculty and students on their approaches to feminism. It also blended these personal histories with the the "formal" history of the department, and juxtaposed past and present feminist practices at UCSB. Throughout the film, students reflected on their own archival, documentary, and representational practices.
