Robot Stories

Robot Stories is opened by a short cartoon that sets the stage for the rest of the film. Several small animated robots sit at the bottom of the viewer’s screen, pumping out binary code, ones and zeros. Suddenly, one robot stops, looks around and pumps out a two. In shock, the other robots stop and stare at their divergent friend. Then, another robot pushes out a renegade three. Soon, the robots transcend their limitations and free themselves, producing a multitude of different numbers and colors.

Just like its opening, Robot Stories is a refreshing four part film that breaks the mold and breathes life back into science fiction for the average viewer. The film’s director, Greg Pak, calls it “science fiction from the heart”, but most viewers will connect because it doesn’t over use special effects as a crutch. Instead, the film’s power comes from its uniquely human characters and their intricate webs of emotions. In all four parts, My Robot Baby, The Robot Fixer, Machine Love, and Clay, Pak uses the powers of human emotion to show that in any world, familiar or radically advanced, humans will never fully accept technology as more than a tool.
