Veterinarians
Did you ever think about becoming a veterinarian?
Being a vet can be a rewarding career option. So if you have a genuine love for animals look no further, go ahead and get trained to be a vet. However it’s not as easy as that sounds. Getting admission into a veterinarian college is highly competitive. After you graduate you need to get a practicing license to be able to handle clients. Many vets prefer to work as freelancers, and open veterinary clinics. Being a self employed vet, like being self employed in any line of work requires for you to put in a substantial amount of money to establish yourself. Moreover, it requires a certain amount of time, maybe years before you will be able to build a clientele.
What you do
Vets find employment in zoos, veterinary hospitals and clinics, and play a significant role in the basic health care of animals. Others go into the line of helping humans where diseases carried by animals are concerned. Yet others go into the research line, and develop new medicines and drugs for animal welfare. More than half of the practicing vets are self employed, and cater to the needs of pet owners. They generally treat small domestic animals like cats and dogs, and maybe the occasional pet rabbits and birds. Their roles generally include basic de-worming and vaccination of animals against killer deceases like rabies and distemper. Most pet owners stick to one vet, and make regular visits for general healthcare and advice for their pets, and this becomes the basis of a vet’s regular income. As the vet builds up a database of regular clients, he or she is in a comfortable position to expand and establish a business, maybe an own clinic.
How you can achieve it
Getting into a vet college can be extremely competitive, and completing your studies in a as a vet is no less demanding than becoming a doctor for humans! Vets not only administer medication for small illnesses, and provide general vaccinations, they are also called upon to do surgery on the animals as and when the need arises. It is important for you, as a vet to plan your career right from the beginning. For example, if you want to get into research, you would need to get yourself the AALAS (USA) certification. If you want to become a veterinarian technician, you could go in for the two year associates degree, or the four year program for technologists. Technologists generally begin their career as interns for established practicing vets, or as part of a team at veterinary hospitals. Being a vet is of course a little harder to achieve and more expensive than a technologist, and requires a four year Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M.).
