ABOUT US

At Bender Surfboards, we aim to push the sport of surfing in new directions by expanding possibilities with our innovative technologies.

Bender’s developer—Stanley Pleskunas—is responsible for a number of monumental advances in a variety of water-related industries, and until now he kept his surf developments private to the general public. His initial goal was to create a more fluid riding experience, but his final product does so much more than that. Our developer’s mantra is, “We’re building dinosaurs; let’s build spaceships,” and his current Bender models are only the beginning of new surf technology to come.

Benders are designed for perfection; they are built specifically to outlast fast, powerful waves. It takes an open mind and a willingness to accept the new, but once you know how durable, practical, and functional a Bender is, you’ll never reach for your old board again.

We apply this same passion for perfection to our surfboard production, and all of our boards are built in-house by a team of expert craftsman. Each board is inspected for premium quality throughout every step of the process to ensure our commitment to excellence.

Check out our Technology section to learn about where we came from, how our technology can help you enhance surfing performance, and how we are creating a new standard of durability in the industry.

FEATURES OF A BENDER

PRE-TENSIONED CROSS FLEX

PTF is the driving force behind the performance-enhancing precision of Bender surfboard construction. The fixed, rigid nature of traditional surfboards leads to rider energy loss in several ways during the dynamic transfer between surfer, board, fins, and wave. PTF harnesses the concept of lost energy and allows the surfer new perspectives and boosts surfing performance and durability.

There are two major components of PTF, the same as with any board: the blank and the glass-job. Bender surfboard construction process is unique and every step of our board construction takes place in-house, ensuring there are no issues beyond our control that could potentially impact performance.

Coupling our Pre-Tensioned Blank Technology (PTB) with our innovative Pre-Tensioned Glass Technology (PTG), Bender surfboard’s has a unique life or “memory” that dramatically alters how the board responds to changing wave energies and rider inputs. This makes the boards “friendly,, great for beginner and intermediate surfers because the tensioned flex keeps you from pearling and trims you down the line at highest efficiency.

Many advanced surfers find the board intriguing yet challenging to master in the first few sessions, leaving them curious about how Bender boards can expand surfing perspectives. Learning to utilize the flex to its full potential is an on-going learning process, just like surfing.

PTF insight: Imagine that you are on a burning rooftop and that you are going to jump off holding onto a piece of thick bungee because that’s all you have. All of the laws of gravity are in effect, and you want to reach the ground safely, so where do you first grab the bungee? At the bottom of the bungee, where it is going to be loose when you go over the edge and fall to the bottom before the bungee tensions? Or where it is going to be tight at the top of the bungee?

A bungee is a great analogy to understand Bender’s concept of tension and how it relates to surfing performance. Using our dual PTB and PTG technologies, we at Bender achieve unparalleled consistency in flex control in all of our surfboards.

Traditional surfboards consist of standard “static” glass jobs composed of loose fibers that, like the bungee on the roof, might snap when they reach their limit at full momentum. Unlike with traditional boards, Benders utilize a pre-tensioned glassing schedule with a controlled memory that responds MORE when you push it FURTHER, like a diving board.

360° SPRING-BACK FLEX

Our 360° Spring-Back Flex allows the board to bend when you initiate your weight into the board during a turn or pump and then returns to its initial shape due to the PTF.

Bender surfboards bend from nose to tail and twist from rail to rail. These capabilities allow the board to trim efficiently in any wave face and have a positive response from minor rider inputs.

360° Spring-Back Flex allows the board to bend when you want it to but still return to its initial shape when pressure is no longer applied. Our flex can go 360° allowing for the surfer to bending in one direction and bend in another direction at the drop of a dime. You can ride a Bender as a dynamically reacting extension of your body; you can alter Bender rails and contours just like a dolphin does when swimming. As you go faster and increase momentum, you can push into the board exponentially, and the board responds exponentially. A Bender can be found to have a positive feedback loop comparable to a diving board at a swimming pool when it is ridden on a proper long, fast, hollow wave. The harder and more consecutive the jumps on a diving board, the more the board will bend, and with Benders, the faster you surf, the more the surfboard will bend.

INCREASED DURABILITY

Our PTF technology provides a second line of defense against typical board damage and breakage beyond the proven durability of the longer molecular structure of epoxy. A standard surfboard will snap when pushed beyond its structural threshold while ours will simply bend as large amounts of pressured are dispersed across the board.

WAT: WATER ACTIVATED TRACTION TECHNOLOGY

How many times have you forgotten your wax at home? How many times have you slipped due to lack of wax or after hours of surfing? How many times has your wax melted all over your car and other belongings? Wax struck us as an inconvenient and an unnecessary expenditure, so we decided to get rid of it. We began looking into alternatives to wax because of the annoyance and convenience factors, and the green idea that we shouldn’t be putting bars of surf wax into our oceans every couple of sessions.

Water Activated Traction Technology utilizes a closed cell membrane to allow the water to activate the traction without being absorbed into your board. The softer nature of the traction pad allows for increased traction and a stronger suction between you and your board.

It can be wet-sanded with 320 grit to a smooth finish around the nose and rails to improve speed and grip.

When dry, any 3M or similarly backed surfing traction pad can be applied with heat and pressure. We know a lot of people like to use traction pads, so wet-sand and stick away.

We also make our boards with a traditional epoxy top for those that are not yet interested in a wax-less surfboard.

DCS: DING-RESISTANT CUSTOM SHAPEABLE RAIL TECHNOLOGY

After riding our own Benders, we discovered the ultimate rail material: a high-density, recyclable plastic material that we fuse to each Pre-Tensioned Blank, creating a strong, ding-proof, shapeable rail.

If you own a Bender, your shaping room is the beach! We recommend using a stiff, waterproof, sanding block and some dry 120 grit. For a nice finish, wet-sand with the same block first 320 then 400, and then go surf! Want YOUR custom rail from your favorite shaper or uncle? No problem! Just take your board to your relative with no glassing required up to ½” inside the template.

Because of the resilient rail material and WAT deck traction, you don’t have to worry about snapping your board. There is no greater feeling than knowing that when you are surfing speedy point-breaks and need every inch of speed that you don’t have to worry about damaging your board. You can finally afford to lose the leash and not worry about dings.

Demos

At Bender, we believe that you have the right to try a board before you buy it. While many other surf companies cannot afford to do demos because of the inherent risk of damaging their products, we are so confident in the durability of our boards that we say, good luck trying to damage our board!

To sign up for a demo, please email Mike at mike@bendersurfboards.com with your location. We will get back to you as soon as possible with the time and location of a demo where you can try the boards.

The flexibility of Bender boards allows them to withstand stress in ways that other surfboards cannot. The video below demonstrates the unique flexibility of Bender boards. Do not try this with an ordinary fiberglass board.

The Twang Fish

If you like to surf long, perfect racing point breaks in California and other surfing locations, then this is the board for you!

When most surfers think of riding fish, they think of summertime ankle slappers and blown-out mush. The Twang is nothing like a normal fish, and is ideal for specific conditions.

Our boards are designed for strong and powerful waves and require shoulder high waves to achieve optimum performance enabled by our flex technology. In the right conditions, the results or riding a Bender are mind blowing.
