Analysis: Photography as Rhetoric

Assignment: The purpose of this assignment is to compose an essay based on analysis of photography as a rhetorical tool .

Task 1

Choose an image or collection of images that make a rhetorical statement you'd like to address. Follow the steps below to begin drafting.

•  Take the time to sit quietly with the image(s) and a piece of paper for your commentary.

•  Take notes about your impressions, ideas, questions, understandings, hunches, possible theme(s) and overall purpose(s) of the image(s).

•  At the bottom of your notes, write an informal paragraph of your interpretation of the image's purpose. What is the photographer trying to accomplish? What is the message being sent? How is it being sent?

•  On the back of your notes, compose a free write of all possible rhetorical purposes of the image(s) and how they were accomplished. Then reflect on how successful the image(s) are.

Task 2

Using your pre-writing strategies from above and the rhetorical knowledge you've built in class, compose an essay—approximately 500 words—where you analyze the photo's rhetorical aspects. (See course syllabus for essay/portfolio guidelines.) When writing the essay, be sure to include an introduction with a clear thesis statement, a well-developed body and a conclusion where you wrap-up your ideas in a comprehensible manner. Please provide a copy of the image(s) in the final portfolio.

Audience: Your reader is an average member of society with limited technical knowledge of photography.
